CA: Our View: City elections need protection of a third party
12/03/2009 …While many cities conduct their own city council elections in either March or April, and often do a fine job, we lean in favor of consolidating city elections with those held in November and contracting with the Los Angeles County
Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk to conduct the election.

La Puente is also going in the wrong direction by moving its city election from November to April in even-numbered years. As Councilman Dan Holloway said, who voted against the move, it will reduce voter turnout and unnecessarily extends the terms of city council members.

And we would add that moving back to a city-run election adds the specter of conflict of interest to the most precious of all democratic principles – the right to vote.

IA: Electronic Pollbooks Continue to Show Impressive Results
During the 2009 municipal elections the Auditor’s Office expanded its experiment with the electronic poll book (e-poll book) to a total of five precincts. Our objective is to evaluate how much e-poll books will increase accuracy and efficiency in the polling place, and save costs in after election processing of voter history.

The cost savings for post-election processing promises to be very significant. In the five precincts using the e-poll books we processed history for 1080 voter records in 26 minutes. A comparable number of records in three precincts processed by hand took 182 minutes.

CA: Maywood activists seek probe into alleged voter fraud
December 1, 2009 Community activists from Maywood plan to file a complaint with the L.A. County district attorney’s office today, seeking an investigation into voting discrepancies during last month’s city elections.

Members of the group, Maywood for Better Community, said some residents were unable to vote in the Nov. 3 election because someone had already voted for them. The group also alleges that some voters lived in other cities, such as Southgate and El Monte, and that other Maywood residents were allowed to vote more than once.
