The electoral commission, headed by its Chairman, Mr. Hendricks Gappy handed a copy of the Electoral Review program, which is aimed at strengthening and consolidating democracy in Seychelles, to the Head of State at State House. After that the Commission met with political parties to discuss the same subject.
The Opposition alliance led by SNP refused to attend the discussion, as usual they were not happy with what was being presented. The Commission replied by saying that it was unfortunate that SNP would think such things especially since they were not even aware what’s in the roadmap. Then we heard about Christopher Gill also not attending the meeting but he has made it a point to say that it was not for the same reasons as the Opposition alliance.
The very confused bunch has however not deterred the Electoral Commission to get ahead with their work, which will pave the way for electoral reform, the task President Michel bestowed to them.
When he received a copy of the Electoral Review programme, the President said: “I am happy to know that you are fast moving and the processes are in place ensuring the good participation by all concerned. It is important for all Seychellois to have ownership of whatever reform we put in place, through much consultation, just as I ensured ownership by all to the successful economic reform program, and look forward to the work that you will be engaged in, for the benefit of Seychelles”.
Despite, another boycott, the plan will take approximately fifteen months to implement and will necessitate both local and international expertise.
