Although some Atlantic Beach officials have said there will be no special election on Tuesday, Gov. Nikki Haley’s order for the vote still stands, and Horry County and state elections officials are going forward with their plans. The election became necessary after the the Nov. 1 results were challenged and then declared void by the town’s election commission. But when the election commission didn’t set a date for a new election, the governor stepped in and issued the order in March.
… Pierce has said the governor didn’t have the authority to order the election. The timing was complicated by a town council decision to extend the regular three-day Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest to 10 days, overlapping the annual Harley rally as well as the election date. Horry County, which the governor ordered to oversee the election, was notified by the town that the town’s regular polling place, its community center, would be unavailable on Tuesday, forcing the county to find an alternative site.
