105,000 new voters could potentially join Luxembourg’s electoral register if a proposal enabling foreign residents to vote finds favour with Luxembourgers. On June 7, Luxembourgers will vote in a referendum to decide, among other things, whether or not to allow foreign residents who meet certain criteria to vote in legislative elections. According to figures published by STATEC, potentially 105,000 foreign residents meet the 10-year residency criterion being proposed.
While only 35,000 foreign residents meet a second criterion of having voted in a communal or European election in Luxembourg, the study authors said that as the next communal elections take place before the legislatives, this could still change. “Foreign residents who have lived here for 10 or more years could still fulfil this condition,” the report read.
The study took figures from the 2011 census, which found that 51.2 percent of foreign residents had been living in the country for 10 or more years. It applied this proportion to the total population given at the beginning of 2015 to calculate the new number of potential voters of 105,000.
