Former Secretary of State Matt Dunlap has made no secret of the fact that he’s seriously considering running against Senator Olympia Snowe.
Secretary of State Charlie Summers used to be Snowe’s State Director. So when Summers held a press conference last week talking about potential voter fraud and destruction of evidence that may have occurred under Dunlap’s watch, Dunlap had some questions.
Dunlap said, “It is questionable timing, and I don’t know what the answer to that is. It doesn’t look very good in terms of being a politically active as Secretary of State, which by the way, there is no prohibition on.”
Summers never named Dunlap as the person who told an employee to destroy potential evidence of voter fraud, but Dunlap says the situation summers described sounds familiar.
Dunlap says he never told anyone to destroy documents, but he did talk to an employee who was concerned about document fraud when it came to illegal immigrants obtaining drivers licenses. He says their conversations eventually led to a law fixing the problem.
“We never talked about elections. Maybe Secretary Summers knows something I don’t know. But what I know is our debate and discussion was completely about identity security and document fraud for obtaining a license. It had nothing to do with elections,” Dunlap said.
Summers will not confirm whether he and Dunlap are talking about the same employee, and he says he can’t give any other details of the investigation beyond what he revealed last week.
