Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin says he won’t challenge the election results from last week’s Democratic primary. He notified the media through a press release Thursday. On Friday, WLBT News got an exclusive interview with the outgoing sheriff.
McMillin has a history of making colorful remarks. His press release actually had some comments on color, directed at his opponent. McMillin says he will not challenge the votes, because he doesn’t believe examining them would make any difference, due to the problems in the election.
In his official statement, McMillin criticized Lewis supporters for saying Hinds County needs a black Sheriff. McMillin, who was offended by those comments, says he has hired, promoted and assigned deputies without regard to race, creed or color during his 20-year tenure.
Those in Lewis’s camp says those statements were made by a few individuals, and did not come directly from the Lewis campaign.
“I think that it really disappoints me that it came down to race at all,” McMillin said.
“This campaign has not ran on race,” said Lewis campaign manager Aaron Banks. “This campaign has ran on Tyrone Lewis’s record. Tyrone Lewis has always said he want to be the Sheriff for everybody.”
McMillin says he plans to assist Tyrone Lewis in the transition into his new job as sheriff of Hinds County.
He also plans to spend his retirement playing with his grandchildren. His latest granddaughter, number six, was born just Thursday.
