Secretary of State Connie Lawson said Friday she is confident there was not a problem with the new electronic poll books used in the May primary election in Porter County. Claims were made that the new poll books resulted in delays and other problems for voters. Kathy Kozuszek, Democrat director of the Porter County Voter Registration, who opposed purchasing the electronic poll books, said in May that the issue could be serious enough for candidates to call for a new election.
Ethan Lowe, attorney for the Porter County Election Board, responded that workers at a few polling places had minor difficulties getting the new electronic poll books up and running but problems were limited and did not result in an hour and a half delay at 30 sites as Kozuszek claimed.
Lawson called on the independent, nonpartisan Voting System Technical Oversight Program to conduct a complete review and the 17-page report was released Friday. In a statement Lawson said after reviewing the technical oversight program’s conclusions, there were several factors that led to the discrepancy between ballots counted and the total number of voters voting.
