To clarify voting rights of felons, a South Dakota House committee passed a bill Thursday that strips any right to cast a ballot until sentences are completed. Sen. Gene Abdallah, a Sioux Falls Republican and the measure’s main sponsor, says the bill is about “fairness” so that all felons lose the same right.
Secretary of State Jason Gant says the bill simplifies the state’s voting laws because various rules exist depending on differences like parole, probation or incarceration. Gant adds the bill clarifies that “you pay your dues to society,” then vote again.
