The AJK election commission enlisted the names of those unregistered but eligible for voting to ensure that they get the right to vote in the upcoming general elections to be held on June 26.
Mirpur Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Tayyab Chaudhry told The Nation on Monday that the eligible voters, whom names could not yet be included, were advised to get the same in the concerned district offices of the Election Commission.
The DC continued that to ensure the removal of errors in the voters lists, an extensive drive was completed across the district, which was supported by other officials saying that the Election Commission had initiated special steps to update the electoral lists of the eligible voters to include Jammu & Kashmir refugee voters as well.
There are twelve seats of AJK Legislative Assembly – six each for occupied Jammu region and others (AJK citizens living in Pakistan), and the held Kashmir valley – exclusively meant for Pakistan-based Jammu & Kashmir refugees settled since 1947 and later on. These seats are filled in by the direct vote on adult franchise basis by the registered male and female voters.
The sources said that the updated copies of the recently-updated voters’ lists were printed and the names of bogus and fake voters and of those who had died were deleted from the lists, enlisting new eligible voters.
The drive for making fresh and updated voters lists was completed within stipulated time frame to ensure the eligibility of voting by all deserving voters in the upcoming elections.
