New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley filed a Right-to-Know Law request to learn if state election officials knew House Speaker William O’Brien’s son was simultaneously registered to vote in Mont Vernon and Maine where he attended college.
“Hopefully that will help determine what exactly took place and clear up any confusion,” Buckley said Thursday. A Mont Vernon resident filed a complaint with Attorney General Michael Delaney’s office earlier this week alleging O’Brien’s wife and other election officials in that town did not follow procedures to prevent her son, Brendan, from being registered to vote in both states.
O’Brien’s wife, Roxanne is one of Mont Vernon’s three election supervisors in charge of keeping updated lists of registered voters. In 2010, Brendan O’Brien was registered to vote in Lewiston, Maine and unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Maine House of Representatives. In November of the same year, he voted for his father in the NH general election.
Brendan O’Brien told the Lewiston Sun-Journal last week he never voted in two states at the same time but voted where he felt he could make the most impact.
The complaint notes that when O’Brien’s son registered in Lewiston in June 2009, Maine officials said a letter would have been sent to Mont Vernon telling officials there to strike Brendan O’Brien’s name from the rolls.
