Florida Governor Rick Scott says he will take a look at some voting changes in the wake of massive lines in counties across Florida, but did not seem anxious to get to work on them. “What I want to do now is sit down with the Secretary of State and say, ‘What can we, how can improve this?'” Ballot tabulation machines failed repeatedly, and most of the polling places in Orange and Seminole County only had one machine per precinct.
When asked if the state should step in to help counties purchase more voting machines, he replied, “I’ll tell you one thing about this job. Nobody comes to my office and suggests we spend less money. Ever body comes with how we spend more, but nobody so far says, ‘Oh, I think you ought to have a new income tax,’ or anything like that.”
Early voting was a sore spot for advocates of easier voting in Florida. Gov. Scott is not keen on extending the voting days.
“Here’s what was good about the bill that the Legislature passed 2 years ago, before that there was no requirement to do Sunday voting, now there was. Very few counties had Sunday voting before, so now they do. The hours before were shortened during the day. It might be like 8 to 4. Now, it was required to be 12 hours,” the governor said.
