The Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal has said the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) will bring a revolutionary change to the country’s electoral system.
“The system will play a vital role in conducting fair elections,” the party’s general secretary Dilip Barua said, while talking to the Election Commission on the EVM dialogue on Wednesday.
“We favour EVM. It is an epoch-making system. Bangladesh has to march forward with the pace of modern technology.”
… Expressing alternative viewpoints, the party placed some ideas and proposals for the public fund (electoral campaign) draft, and the processes of the appointment of CEC and other commissioners.
Barua recommended having representation from journalists and academia in the search committee. However, he did not comment on the decision to include one woman in the three-member EC.
The party also made a proposal for fund allocation for corresponding parties and independent candidates who get two percent public support.
“We think big, even though we (the party) are small. We don’t like the caretaker government system either. It’s good to participate in polls under the Election Commission. That’s why we have to strengthen the Election Commission,” he said.
CEC A T M Shamsul Huda in the discussion said the commission had, in principle, taken the decision of using EVM almost a year ago, and pointed out that EVMs had already been used in the Chittagong City Corporation polls.
He mentioned that the decision had been talked about widely because the prime minister had also given her consent and the exercise was completed following her nod.
