The Maldives is to introduce the electronic voting technology for the first time for the presidential election to be held in 2013, Elections Commission announced today.
In a statement, the commission said its members unanimously made the decision at a meeting held today. The commission said it would make necessary amendments to the election laws and submit the amended legislations to relevant authorities in order to introduce the electronic voting technology for the 2013 election.
The commission is also working on to set up a taskforce in order to conduct awareness programmes about the electronic voting technology.
The Elections Commission had on previous occasions talked of introducing the electronic voting technology but none of the plans had materialised so far.
Electronic voting can include punched cards, optical scan voting systems and specialised voting kiosks. It can also involve transmission of ballots and votes via telephones, private computer networks or the internet.
Electronic voting can speed the counting of ballots and can provide improved accessibility for disabled voters.
