Within the first week of early voting in Memphis, a couple said they had issues with their ballots. Their ballots said they lived in District 7, but they actually live in District 5. Shelby County Election Commission Chairman Robert Meyers said they learned about the issue on Friday and found those voters did in fact get the wrong ballot. “This particular incident I believe that they were very close to the line and so that just didn’t appear as clearly as perhaps we would’ve liked for it to,” Meyers said.
He went on to say the commission revisited the database over the weekend to make sure this problem was an exception. “Obviously we took their concern very seriously and looked into that issue and found that a portion of their street was in fact on the wrong side,” said Meyers.
One of the voters alerted election officials to the mistake before casting his ballot and was able to vote using a provisional ballot, that will be counted after Election Day. His wife however, went ahead and cast her ballot in the wrong district. Chairman Meyers said there is nothing the Election Commission can do at this point.
