As I mentioned yesterday, the Libertarian Party of Colorado sued the State of Colorado to get more time to petition candidates on to the ballots to replace two state senators who are facing recall elections. It seemed to me that the Libertarians were likely to win because their argument was based squarely on the state constitution, even though a victory by them would through some chaos into the election, particularly by making it impossible to conduct a proper mail-in ballot election. Indeed, news reports say that despite the recent passage of a law that requires all major Colorado elections to be by mail, this election will not be. Yesterday, the judge in the case ruled for the Libertarians, meaning they will have until late August to try to submit enough valid signatures to have their candidates’ names appear on the ballot.
I am a strong supporter of the Libertarian Party, have been registered Libertarian in the past, and have probably voted for more Libertarians than Republicans over the past two decades.
However, given that John Morse, the horrendous president of the state senate who seems about to be recalled only won his last election because of the presence of a Libertarian candidate, I encourage all conservative, Libertarian, or simply rational voters in CO’s 11th Senate District to vote for the Republican candidate this time around if there is also a Democrat on the ticket — though that seems unlikely at this time.
At this point,it seems likely that a Libertarian and a Democrat will get on the ballot in Pueblo, in addition to the Republican who has already qualified. As mentioned above, in Colorado Springs, it is unlikely a Democrat will join the race, so if Morse gets recalled, he should be replaced by a Republican.
