Gov. Brian Schweitzer has vetoed a bill to require a government-issued photo identification to cast a vote during an election.
Schweitzer says the bill would have placed an unnecessary burden on low-income, elderly, disabled and student voters.
The governor’s veto kills one of a number of Republican-backed election bills that came before the Legislature this session.
Proponents say bills such as the one vetoed Thursday help prevent voter fraud.
Critics say there has been no evidence of fraud and no reason for the bills.
