Members of the newly-established Libyan election commission have been sworn in during a ceremony in the capital Tripoli. Senior Libyan officials, including the chairman of the National Transitional Council (NTC), Mustafa Abdel Jalil, attended the event on Sunday. The commission will help put in place a process for an election in June, which is expected to determine the members of Libya’s new National Assembly. The elections are to mark the country’s first free polls.
Othman Abu Bakr Qagiji, sworn in as the head of the commission, stated that the commission “with the help of God will supervise the mechanism of the electoral process that will lead to the forming of the national general congress as stated in the constitutional declaration.”
After the ceremony, the NTC chairman expressed his confidence that Libya would hold peaceful elections. “We bet on the Libyan people to fulfill our promises. It’s true that the security conditions are not at its best, but the Libyan people are capable of making their future by themselves and capable of getting through these elections to the next phase safely,” he stated.
