This time, State Representative Mark Lowery has introduced a bill requiring a voter provide verification of their identity when they go to vote. … In 2014, Pulaski County Circuit Judge Tim Fox ruled that Act 595, introduced in the 89th General Assembly, was unconstitutional. The Arkansas Supreme Court agreed with Judge Fox’s decision, striking down the act.
… Opponents of similar Voter ID laws have said and continue to say that it would disenfranchise voters. The ACLU says on their website that more than 21 million Americans don’t have “government issued photo identification.” The page also states that the right to vote is protected by six different United States constitutional amendments.
“It is important, instead, to focus on both expanding the franchise and ending practices which actually threaten the integrity of the elections,” the ACLU said. “Such as improper purges of voters, voter harassment, and distribution of false information about when and where to vote. None of these issues, however, are addressed or can be resolved with a photo ID requirement.”
