Thousands of European citizens who reside in the Republic of Cyprus will have the right to vote and/or to be elected in the local authorities’ elections, which will take place in December, 2011.
In statements to CNA, Head of the Election Service of the Ministry of the Interior, Demetris Demetriou, said that the number of European Union citizens who are expected to apply for registration in the special electoral list for European Community electors could surpass 6.000.
The number of EU electors who are now registered in the list stands at 5.243, while applications still pour in. Around 697 from the 5.243 persons who are registered in the list reside in Nicosia, 237 in Famagusta, 390 in Larnaka, 1.117 in Limassol, and 2.802 in Pafos. In their vast majority, they come from the UK (2.807) and from Greece (1.937).
In order to be able to exercise their voting rights, EU electors must complete until October 2, 2011, the registration form, which may be obtained at the nearest District Administration Office or the Citizen Service Center or it may be downloaded from the website of the Ministry of the Interior (www.moi.gov.cy).
Municipal/community elections are held every five years in December. The Republic of Cyprus joined the EU in May 2004. EU citizens residing in Cyprus voted for the first time at the 2006 elections, according to the acquis communautaire.
