A South Carolina group is enlisting voters who might not be able cast ballots as it challenges the state’s new voter ID bill.
The SC Progressive Network at a news conference Friday had voters on hand who lacked birth certificates or whose birth certificates aren’t accepted by South Carolina.
South Carolina’s new law requires valid photographic identification issued by the state or military. People who lack that can cast provisional ballots but would have to show that ID within three days for their votes to count.
The law is being reviewed by the U.S. Justice Department and network co-chairman Virginia Sanders said nearly 180,000 voters who may lose their rights need to protest the change.
