Former advisers to different caretaker governments have urged political parties not to create instability in the country centring the interim rule and suggested that they find a solution on the basis of mutual understanding.
Disputes among the political parties over holding the next general elections might lead to another political unrest, threatening continuation of democracy and public safety, they fear. People of the country now don’t want to see political instability, they said, expressing hope that political parties will bring out a peaceful solution with their wisdom.
The Daily Star yesterday talked to six advisers to different caretaker governments on what they think about the ongoing debate and whether the next national polls should be held under political or interim government.
The ruling Awami League and main opposition BNP have taken opposite stances over the issue after the Supreme Court declared the caretaker government system unconstitutional and void. However, the SC observed that the system may be practiced for holding two more parliamentary elections for the sake of “safety of the state and its people”.
Dr Akbar Ali Khan stressed the need for a dialogue between AL and BNP to overcome possible political instability.
“The only way to overcome the crisis is sincere and constructive dialogue among the political parties,” he said, adding that the SC has kept a room for the system for two terms, while AL also admitted the necessity of the system to the parliamentary special committee for constitutional amendment.
