Senate President Tom Niehaus announced Thursday that majority Republicans introduced legislation to repeal the divisive elections overhaul bill that is scheduled for a referendum vote in November, Gongwer News Service reports. Sen. Bill Coley (R-Middletown) is the sponsor of the bill (SB295). Republicans hope “to take a step back and revisit the debate in hopes of reaching a more bipartisan consensus,” Niehaus, R-New Richmond, said in a statement.
But backers of an effort to repeal Ohio’s election law overhaul say organized labor would join the Obama campaign to vigorously fight any attempt by lawmakers to pass replacement legislation before November’s presidential election. They say labor was invigorated by last year’s collective bargaining battle.
Fair Elections Ohio was reacting to a Jan. 25 proposal by Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted. He called for scrapping the election law so it won’t appear on fall ballots. He said the campaign for repeal would confuse voters.
